With the news of crazy weather in many parts of the country, we are reminded how important it is to plan ahead for emergencies, especially weather related ones.
I was impressed to read about a “Get Better Bin” created by Ginny at Organizing Homelife. Basically an emergency kit for illness. A great idea for this time of year, when so much illness is going around. Another great idea for winter emergency-preparedness is an emergency kit for your car. If you were stuck in the snow for several hours, do you have what you need in your car to keep you going? Experts recommend a simple car emergency kit, and you can add your own personal touches as you go along.
A fabric tote contains our car emergency kit, but a cardboard box would do just as well. In mine I’ve included extra socks and gloves, hand warmers, some bottled water and high-protein granola bars, jumper cables, and a bit of bright colored cloth that can be used as a flag. It’s also a good idea to keep an extra blanket and jacket in the trunk. You can add personal touches; for us it’s a deck of playing cards in the glove box, because what could be better to keep you amused when you’re perishing in a snow bank than playing bridge? 😉
I hope this sparks some ideas for emergency preparedness in winter…and I’m eagerly awaiting Spring!
